This blog, which is part of our series for Anti-Bullying Week 2023, focuses on the role of the target in bullying. Is there such a thing as a typical bullying target? Are some people more likely to be targeted by bullies than others?
Who Are Typical Bullying Targets?
A target of bullying is someone who is picked on by a bully or bullies. In many cases, a bully will target an individual who stands out in some way. For example, they may pick on someone who:
- Has an illness, physical disability or learning difficulty.
- Is particularly talented, creative or is a high achiever.
- Is hard-working, quiet or studious.
- Is of a different race/religion/culture.
- Is of a different sexual orientation.
- There is no reason for the bullying — the bully simply picks on them.
It is clear that there are complex reasons why bullies target certain individuals, and every situation is different. It is also clear that it is the bully that has the problem, not the target.
The Effects of Bullying on the Target
Bullying can make people feel very apprehensive and insecure. It can also have devastating physical and mental effects on the life of the target. It can lead to anxiety as well as severe types of depression. Many people who experience bullying in childhood suffer long-term consequences including addiction issues, social anxiety disorder and relationship issues.
Help for Targets of Bullying
For the target of bullying, it is important they feel listened to and that their concerns are taken seriously. This is the perhaps the most important step in helping them recover. Depending on the severity of the bullying, some form of treatment may also be helpful, such as psychotherapy.
Bullying prevention and intervention are key elements in the fight against all types of bullying and this includes having a robust anti-bullying policy in place. We encourage everyone to ‘make a noise about bullying’ during Anti-Bullying Week 2023.
