Safer Internet Day 2024 will take place on the 6th of February 2024, organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre. The theme this year is: ‘Inspiring change? Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online’.
Making a Difference Online
The aim of Safer Internet Day is to provide a safe online environment for all. Almost 70% of the global population now use the internet, which means staying safe online is not only a challenge, but a necessity. It is therefore important to find ways to make a difference online such as leveraging new and existing technologies. We can also consult with young people to understand their concerns and educate them on the dangers that exist on the internet. This will help us provide systems and tools to ensure we all have a positive online experience.
Managing Influence Online
Safer Internet Day also explores ways we can manage influence online and change the internet to make it safe and secure for children and young people. When we look at online safety, this includes looking at the impact of online influencers on young people and whether this is beneficial or harmful. As social media has grown in popularity over the past decade, so has the fame and reputation of online influencers.
It is undeniable that these influencers have a great deal of power and can persuade and manipulate their followers to think and act in certain ways. It is therefore important to educate young people to help them navigate social media and make informed decisions about what they view.
Inspiring Change Online
What do young people want to change online? How do they envisage the future of the internet? What about social media? Can social media transform in a positive way, and how can young people inspire change online? By working together we can open up new opportunities for making positive changes online. It is by being open to new ideas and prioritising online safety that we can make these changes a reality.
