In conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day held on 10th September 2022, this blog examines the increase in pre-teen and teenage suicides.
It is evident that the pandemic caused a rise in poor mental health conditions worldwide. However, these issues were not exclusive to adults. A report in The Guardian dated February 2021 stated that 7% of children in the UK attempt suicide before the age of 17. The same report expressed concern at the rise in the rate of self-harm in teens and pre-teens due to the COVID-19 crisis and the knock on mental health issues.
Self-harm among children and adolescents is a huge red flag. Mental health professionals sign-post this behaviour for future suicidal ideation or suicide attempts.
The worrying issues of cyberbullying via social media has seen vulnerable youngsters driven to suicide. Online bullying can be relentless. The pandemic has vastly increased the amount of time that pre-teens and teenagers spend online, therefore opening themselves up to more bullying and online grooming than before.
More youngsters than ever are suffering from mental health conditions, ranging from anxiety to depression. Eating disorders have also been on the increase, largely driven by disordered and unrealistic images on social media. If a teenager is already struggling with their mental health or body image, the risk of suicide may also increase.
It is clear that education is needed, along with adequate, age-appropriate resources, to help parents, teachers and others understand and take the necessary steps to prevent pre-teen and teenage depression. The onus is on each of us look out for vulnerable pre-teens and teenagers who may be suffering psychologically and emotionally.
If you are concerned that a youngster you know is having suicidal thoughts, it is important that you talk to them, and let them know you are there for them, you care and they are not alone.
