What is Body Image?
Body image is the perception we have of our physical body and the way this image affects our emotions. It involves the way in which we gauge the attractiveness or appeal of our own body, how we see our physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception. It is also the way in which we compare our attractiveness to the standards set by society.
Types of Body Image
People can have a positive body image or a negative body image.
Positive Body Image
A positive body image, or healthy body image, means being comfortable and happy with the way we look and feel. It is important that we develop a positive body image because this impacts our attitude towards food and exercise.
Negative Body Image
A negative body image, or unhealthy body image, is linked to low self-esteem because we judge our body in a negative light. This can lead to the development of mental health issues including depression.
