Returning to School
Going back to school after any holiday period can lead to feelings of nervousness and apprehension. There are many reasons why some young people feel this way.
How can we help make it easier for them when they return to school? What can young people do to make it easier for themselves?
The start of a new term is usually a time of dread for most schoolchildren. All around the world young people are returning to school after the coronavirus lockdown. Although the effect on them is difficult to gauge, one thing is certain — the majority of young people were keen to get back to normal post COVID-19.
We need to ask:
- What will a return to school during the COVID-19 pandemic look like?
- Will children be safe in school?
- How can we help young people return to normal school life?
- What are the psychological effects of COVID-19 on children?
The impact of COVID-19 on a young person’s mental health is difficult to determine. Their experiences during the lockdown period will have varied for each of them. Some will have had a relatively good experience while others not so positive. Bear in mind some may have lost a loved one to the coronavirus and this needs to be considered when they return to school. It is also important to bear in mind that some young people have an unhappy home life and their circumstances may have worsened when they were quarantined at home together.
School staff must ensure there is a welcoming atmosphere on the first day back and they should also encourage open and honest communication. As students return to school they may want to discuss their experiences during the lockdown, so allow sufficient time for an informal discussion if possible. Some students may wish to discuss the possibility of a second wave and a second lockdown. Even if time is short and there is lots to get through, it is important that teachers take the time to reassure students.
Hygiene is extremely important when returning to school and head teachers must ensure they have taken steps to implement adequate handwashing stations, mask wearing (including having spare masks on hand), physical distancing, and facilities for temperature checks.
As part of our commitment to the wellbeing of young people, we have produced a resource pack which will help teachers introduce the theme of COVID-19 to their students through a variety of topics.
