Lesson plans for teaching oracy, enabling teachers to introduce oracy skills to their students by:
- Encouraging individual students to prepare a short talk on an issue or topic that is dear to them and speaking to the class for two minutes about this topic.
- Introducing small group discussions covering a variety of topics — e.g. how to develop a set of ground rules for a class debate.
- Having a class debate on a specific proposition. Half the class can speak for and half can speak against the proposition. The teacher will need to provide some guidance and the students can use the ground rules already developed (above).
- Thinking about listening skills — the group listens to a short audio piece and then answers questions about it.
- Having a discussion around non-verbal communication with examples — e.g. facial expressions, gestures, posture, appearance etc.
