Gangs and gang violence are regularly featured in the news. Whilst gangs are not always involved in crime, many do take part in criminal activity and their members may carry knives, guns or other weapons.
Youth Gang Involvement
People don’t just decide one day to join a gang and find the nearest place to sign up. There is typically a process or connection that draws a young person in.
One of the key factors that lead young people to gang membership is some sort of childhood anti-social behaviour they have previously been involved in, such as:
- Repeated disobedience and rule breaking
- Aggressive behaviour
- Stealing
- Vandalism
- Truancy
- Insolence towards anyone in authority
Like-minded individuals that display conduct like this tend to attract and influence each other, usually escalating the behaviour.
Other reasons for being in a gang include things like providing a sense of protection, notoriety and gaining a reputation, that some young people find appealing.
